Trump, Xi Summit Yields Warm Words, Limited Deals Amid Rivalry
The Story
US President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state visit in Washington, culminating in a state dinner on Thursday where Xi stated talks with Trump added new substance to US-China relations.
Trump presented Xi with a statue of a bald eagle, and later called the meeting very productive on Truth Social, adding that tremendous things will be happening. The summit produced warm words but limited immediate breakthroughs, including a two-month extension of the trade truce until January 10. Xi, according to the Chinese foreign ministry, said the two economic teams reached a new joint arrangement.
Key issues discussed included trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, and the wars in Iran and Ukraine. Xi urged Trump to take the correct position on Taiwan, amid a paused US weapons package for the island. Diplomatic gestures included Trump rolling out the red carpet for Xi at Andrews Air Force Base and showing him White House construction projects.
At the dinner, Trump said he and Xi never gotten along better, while Xi stressed that AI should remain under human control and called for healthy competition between the two powers. Xi also called for extensive cooperation to avoid the "Thucydides trap," proposing strengthened communication and improved military crisis communication mechanisms. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that details of new US-China trade agreements covering a subset of non-sensitive goods will be released Monday.
