South Carolina Senate Debate: Graham Admits National Security Ignorance

Appointed Senator Darline Graham stated "I'm just going to be honest here. I'm not that informed on national security" during a Tuesday televised debate against Representative Ralph Norman.

The remark came when co-moderator Greta Van Susteren asked about Taiwan and the South China Sea as national security issues for the United States. Graham, who was appointed to fill the seat of her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, added, "National security is not my thing." She also stated, "I'm not a polished politician up here."

Norman and Graham traded criticisms over experience, ambition, campaign finance, and policy positions in the debate held at the Newberry Opera House. Early voting for the Republican Senate runoff opened Wednesday. President Donald Trump has endorsed Graham for a full term. Nikki Haley, former Republican governor of South Carolina, commented on Graham's admission, stating, "Lindsey Graham was well informed on the United States’ national security. Darline Graham admits she’s not. This is not something you inherit. And it’s critical in the U.S. Senate."

Graham, who never held office before her appointment last month, said her focus would be on issues that matter to the average person, not foreign policy. She also stated her positions align with President Donald Trump's stance on foreign policy matters, including the war in Iran. Norman highlighted his stance on prosecuting Dr. Anthony Fauci, stating, "He ought to be in an orange jumpsuit," which drew applause.

Graham countered Norman's points by stating she had done more in 20 days than you’ve done in 20 years, citing co-signed abortion bills, the Russia Sanctions Act, and the SAVE America Act. Norman pointed to his support for the "Frontline Doctors" during COVID-19 and his opposition to mask mandates. Graham questioned Norman's past votes against defense spending bills.
