Houthi Attacks Kill Six in Red Sea, Escalating Shipping Tensions

Six people were killed in Houthi attacks on a commercial vessel in the Red Sea near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait on Tuesday, Yemen's coastguard reported.

The vessel, identified as the "Tihama," was carrying weapons according to the Houthis, while Yemen's Transport Ministry stated four crew members and two Yemeni rescue personnel were killed. Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed three Pakistani nationals were killed and one injured, condemning the attack as a violation of international law and a threat to maritime security.

This marks the first fatalities in a Houthi strike on shipping since the Iran war began on February 28. The Houthis also targeted Yemeni government military sites in eastern Yemen, killing at least 30 government soldiers, and attacked Saudi Aramco's Jazan oil refinery. In response, Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, stated the government would not accept a new truce and no action by the Houthi militias will go unanswered.

Saudi crude exports from the Red Sea are increasingly switching off tracking signals to avoid Houthi attacks, with analysts noting dark voyages. Vessel numbers through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait have decreased to 32 from 50. The Houthis declared a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia on July 20, targeting the U.S. and its allies in the Iran conflict.
