British Comedian Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Assault
The Story
British actor and comedian Russell Brand was convicted in a London court of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women, following a trial at Southwark Crown Court.
The jury acquitted him of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault regarding two other women. Judge Joel Bennathan revoked Brand's bail and remanded him in custody, warning him that he faces a custodial term at his sentencing on Monday. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley stated that police are investigating two additional cases and expect many more women to come forward following the conviction.
Prosecutors detailed that Brand used his fame and influence to prey on women across offenses dating from 2004 to 2009. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and various charity officials praised the courage of the complainants and emphasized the accountability of influential figures.
