10 Countries Condemn Imprisonment of Hong Kong Activist Joshua Wong
The Story
The foreign ministers of ten countries issued a joint statement condemning the sentencing of Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to ten years in prison under the city's national security law.
The joint statement, issued by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, called for an immediate end to unjust prosecutions and urged authorities to uphold the Sino-British Joint Declaration. The Hong Kong government condemned these international criticisms as malicious attacks and unwarranted interference in internal affairs.
The sentencing also coincided with the High Court handing down prison terms ranging from five years and two months to seven years and three months to three former leaders of the disbanded Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.
