Algeria Seeks Death Penalty for Arsonists After Deadly Fires

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the amendment of the Penal Code to establish the death penalty with immediate execution for individuals involved in deliberately setting fires.

The directive mandates that the code be amended before September 15. This move follows deadly wildfires that ravaged parts of the country, killing at least 12 people. Tebboune declared three days of national mourning on Thursday. He stated that he was not ruling out foul play after 100 wildfires were recorded. The president's order aims to reinstate capital punishment for arsonists in response to the recent blazes.
