Trump And Carney Signal Progress Toward United States And Canada Trade Pact
The Story
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and United States President Donald Trump held bilateral discussions over the weekend aimed at establishing a new cross-border trade agreement.
In a public statement on Sunday, Carney described the discussion as a constructive conversation intended to outline a mutually beneficial deal that would support domestic employment, lower living costs for households, and preserve Canadian sovereignty, language rules, and cultural institutions. Speaking to reporters ahead of an Iowa campaign appearance, Trump stated that both governments are close to reaching an agreement and possess the concept of a deal that would benefit American farmers.
The White House confirmed that administrative teams will negotiate specific terms in the coming weeks. The diplomatic exchange follows a breakdown in formal negotiations in August, when Trump enacted a 50 percent tariff on $20 billion in Canadian imports, prompting Ottawa to counter with reciprocal levies on American steel, dairy products, farm machinery, and consumer goods.
Disagreements during earlier rounds centered on vehicle tariff rates, particularly regarding heavy-duty vehicles, alongside proposed United States restrictions on Canadian trade autonomy and language regulations. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Carney on Sunday, arguing the prime minister had failed to secure terms superior to previous agreements. Negotiating teams from Washington and Ottawa are scheduled to resume technical meetings in November.
