Enes Kanter Freedom Removed From WNBA Game, Ruled Ineligible for Draft
The Story
Enes Kanter Freedom was removed from a WNBA game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky on Sunday night.
Freedom was ejected late in the third quarter after a heated courtside exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. Freedom was sitting baseline in support of Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, an outspoken advocate for protecting women's sports. The WNBA has ruled both Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White ineligible to play in the league. The league characterized Kanter's actions as publicity stunts, stating it is not going to give oxygen to efforts designed to mock the league or use this topic to demean and marginalize others.
The WNBA added it will not allow outside pressure or manufactured controversy to dictate league processes. Freedom has been a vocal opponent of transgender athletes in women's sports and declared himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA draft to challenge the league's gender policy. During the game, Freedom wore a black shirt reading "WOMAN: Noun, adult human female."
Cloud confronted Freedom after scoring a basket, shouting at him from the court. Freedom stood up and raised both arms while stepping toward the court before players and officials intervened. Freedom later told OutKick that Cloud said, "She's not gonna sleep with you," and he believed his shirt provoked her outburst, stating, "I'm just here to protect women and support her."
Ex-Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Ryan defended Freedom, calling out the WNBA for failing to stand up for female athletes. Ryan commented on Freedom’s Instagram, "Getting demonized for trying to PROTECT women's sports and calling out the absurdity that the WNBA cannot define what the W is. Just unreal and sad." Cloud posted a message on Threads supporting transgender-identifying people, writing, "You are apart [sic] of MY community & tribe. You belong. You’re loved. You’re seen. You’re perfect as you are. & you will always be protected by me."
