Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov rewarded the commander of the corvette Soobrazitelny on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, for firing flares at a Danish Air Force Fennec helicopter.

The ministry claimed the helicopter did not respond to calls on the international communications channel, prompting the corvette commander to fire two red signal flares to prevent a provocation, after which the helicopter left the area. Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus, however, accused the Soobrazitelny crew of making no attempt to contact the helicopter, which he said narrowly avoided the flares.

Bruus stated the helicopter was on a routine mission to photograph the corvette. Denmark summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin, with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen describing the incident as completely unacceptable. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the reckless action from Russia and stated that Russia had stepped up its hybrid warfare against Europe.

Ambassador Barbin, in turn, accused the Danish military of dangerous maneuvers near Russian warships, creating a risk of collision, and claimed Denmark has rejected Moscow’s proposals to sign a maritime and airspace agreement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the incident part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe.
