The United States Department of Justice urged a federal judge to consider contempt charges against an immigrant rights group and its lawyers after they published an analysis of a government dataset concerning voter registration in California.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg permitted the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, or CHIRLA, to access federal data on approximately 20,000 individuals alleged by the Trump administration to be noncitizen voters, under a strict order prohibiting public disclosure of names and restricting use of the data solely to legal standing arguments.

The Justice Department argued in a Sunday filing that the report constituted unauthorized political grandstanding violating Boasberg's order because it was irrelevant to the group's legal standing. The dispute stems from a broader legal battle in which the Trump administration sought to prevent California from counting ballots from the list without citizenship verification, a request previously denied by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
