Britain Provides Defensive Air Refueling Support to Saudi Arabia Against Houthis
The Story
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that Britain will provide defensive air-to-air refuelling support to Saudi Arabia's military.
This operation will involve a single RAF Voyager aircraft, based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, and is expected to begin within days, initially lasting for several weeks. UK Defence Minister Luke Pollard stated the support would comply with international humanitarian law and serves national security interests. The UK's decision follows a formal request from Saudi Arabia amid an intensifying wave of Houthi missile and drone attacks.
On Saturday, Saudi Arabia reported intercepting a ballistic missile targeting Riyadh, with residents observing explosions and smoke near the capital's airport. The Houthis claim they struck targets in Yanbu, Taif, Baysh, and Farasan. The group has also gained control of Yemen’s western coast, including the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a chokepoint for oil transportation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed Washington's commitment to its defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, stating the US intends to live up to their commitments on it.
Saudi Arabia's MASNA Ventures fund is accelerating investment in local manufacturing of US and allied defense technology, focusing on autonomous and anti-drone systems. The conflict with the Houthis began in 2015 when a Saudi-led coalition, backed by the US and UK, intervened in Yemen’s civil war. A UN panel found in 2016 that the Saudi-led coalition engaged in widespread and systematic attacks on civilian targets.
The Houthis are demanding an end to the Saudi blockade on Yemen. The UN Refugee Agency expects around 230,000 displaced persons in Yemen and 10,000 refugees in Djibouti to require humanitarian assistance.
