The International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised its global growth forecast for 2026 to 3.1%, a slight uptick from its 3% forecast in July, attributing this to still-strong AI infrastructure investment offsetting higher oil prices.

The IMF's World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, released during its annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, also predicts 3.4% global growth in 2027. This 2027 prediction is based on assumptions that the Strait of Hormuz reopens by March and shipping conditions return to pre-war levels by October 2027. The IMF warned of risks to growth and financial stability, including a potential end to the AI investment boom, which could lead to a sharp fall in asset prices and cut global GDP by 1.1% by 2028, including a 1.8% drop in U.S. output.

IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva stated the economy is standing on one leg, the AI leg, questioning what happens if it wobbles. The IMF also highlighted risks from growing debt levels and a prolonged Middle East conflict, noting that a protracted war keeping oil prices above $130 through Q1 2027 would cut 2027 growth by half a percentage point.

The IMF cut Argentina's 2026 growth forecast from 3.5% to 2.1% and raised its unemployment forecast from 7.2% to 7.6%, noting that Latin America has largely missed out on the AI investment surge. The U.S. war on Iran, launched in February, plunged the Middle East into violence and caused global energy prices to skyrocket.
