Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated on Tuesday that Japan takes US sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) head very seriously and that these sanctions are incompatible with Japan's stance.

Takaichi's comments follow US sanctions against nine of the 18 ICC judges and three ICC prosecutors. The US also sanctioned three Palestinian human rights organizations and UN Special Rapporteur on Occupied Palestine Francesca Albanese. President Donald Trump issued Executive Order 14203 on February 6, 2025, authorizing sanctions against ICC judges and senior prosecutors involved in investigations into alleged crimes in Afghanistan and Palestine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Albanese directly engaged with the ICC in efforts to investigate US or Israeli nationals without their consent. Sanctions include frozen or closed bank accounts, rejection of financial transactions, denial of access to digital services, and travel bans. Four human rights organizations have filed a lawsuit alleging Trump's executive order violates the US Constitution, federal statutes, and international law. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch criticized Tokyo's initial reaction to Washington's sanctions against ICC President Tomoko Akane.
