Trump Posts Senator's Phone Number, Flooding Venmo with Daylight Saving Requests
The Story
Senator Tom Cotton's personal Venmo account received numerous requests for outlandish sums after President Donald Trump posted Cotton's cellphone number on Truth Social early Saturday.
Social media users shared screenshots of Cotton declining requests, including one for "$1000 for the increase in gas prices," with one user calling him stingy. The Venmo account was found to be linked to the number Trump posted, and Cotton was already receiving calls and texts when the account was revealed. President Trump posted the number in an attempt to pressure Cotton to vote for the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent.
The House passed the bill 308-117 in July, but it has stalled in the Senate. Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, stated on X Saturday afternoon that he opposes the bill because it would lead to absurdly late sunrises in the winter and "Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark." He noted that Congress has previously enacted and repealed permanent daylight saving time.
Trump, who called Cotton a friend, urged Arkansas residents to call the senator and tell him to "GET IT DONE!" Trump has previously acknowledged the issue as "50/50" but now seeks a legislative win as his approval rating declines.
