Trump Administration Imposes Visa Restrictions on South African Officials
The Story
The Trump administration has imposed visa restrictions on South African officials, citing anti-white discrimination, uncompensated land seizures, and incitement of imminent violence against members of minority ethnic or racial groups in South Africa.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measure, referring to President Donald Trump's executive order of February 2025, which condemned government-sponsored discrimination occurring against the Afrikaners and other minority populations in South Africa. This action is part of a broader campaign of pressure by the Trump administration towards South Africa. The US previously suspended aid to Pretoria last year and established a program to resettle Afrikaners and other members of South Africa’s white minority as refugees in the US.
The Trump administration also imposed a 30% tariff on most South African imports. South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola rejected the US travel bans, insisting that South Africa has the sovereign right to put in place laws that address the nation’s concern over centuries of racial injustice. Lamola urged the US to respect South Africa’s democracy and sovereignty and to continue dialogue rather than taking unilateral action.
BRICS countries have rejected the US exclusion of South Africa from the G20, describing any arbitrary revision of the G20’s membership as inadmissible. President Trump announced South Africa's exclusion from the G20 after boycotting the G20 summit in Johannesburg last November.
