Trump Promises $5,000 Payout to Americans if Republicans Win Midterms
The Story
President Donald Trump states every adult American will receive $5,000 if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump made this promise at the first-ever midterm convention for either major party in Dallas on Wednesday night. Vice President JD Vance appeared to partially walk back Trump's claims, stating, "If the Republicans win, you." The proposed payout, which Trump referred to as a "$5,000 Trump Dividend," would cost more than a trillion dollars to fulfill.
Trump has made similar suggestions before, none of which have come to pass. Some Republican lawmakers gathered in Dallas wavered between fully embracing and avoiding the president's promise. Attendees at the midterm convention did not widely embrace Trump's plan for $5,000 checks. Critics have accused Trump of bribery due to the promise. Trump also joked about winning the 2020 election and ridiculed his own party's Senate nominee in Texas during his speech.
He highlighted the stock and labor markets' performance and the administration's border-enforcement policies. Trump criticized Democrats for the excess and insanity of the intense identity politics of the early decade. The American Conservative noted that Trump's performance in Dallas was refreshing after he had too often seemed tired, angry, and aporetic in the past year. The question remains whether the American people are tired of Trump's routine, which has been ongoing for a decade.
