US, China Agree on AI Communication Channel, $30 Billion Tariff Cuts
The Story
China announced on Saturday that it agreed with the United States on a $30 billion reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement and to launch a dialogue on artificial intelligence, following President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington.
The two sides also agreed to establish a trade council and extend the outcomes of earlier talks in Kuala Lumpur. Regarding artificial intelligence, the nations agreed to hold a dialogue on the technology's risks and benefits, with the next round of discussions set for November, and to set up a communication channel for AI-related incidents.
China's Foreign Ministry stated Beijing attaches importance to and respects Washington's use of the term super intelligence in place of artificial intelligence. President Donald Trump had previously stated that Xi Jinping seemed to like the rewording. The summit, which concluded on Friday, produced no major breakthroughs but aimed to set up working groups to prevent problems from escalating.
On foreign policy, the leaders agreed that Iran must fulfill its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and that no country or institution can impose tolls on international waterways. Both leaders plan to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' meeting and the Group of 20 summit hosted by the other.
