The White House confirmed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will not reimburse the federal government for money already spent on campaign-style public service announcements (PSAs).

A White House spokesperson stated that Trump's Truth Social post on Monday was not referring to reimbursement. The ads, which critics compared to campaign material, were paid for through a $20 million contract using funds from the Department of Homeland Security. More than $10 million in taxpayer-funded ads had run since September, according to AdImpact.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey found 86 percent of U.S. adults disapproved of using taxpayer money for the $20 million ad campaign, with only 9 percent in support. Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans criticized the ads as a possible violation of federal laws prohibiting the use of taxpayer funds for publicity or propaganda purposes. However, critics noted that Trump's spots offered broader political messages, with one ad appearing to be directly lifted from a 2024 campaign video and another featuring campaign slogans and footage of Mount Rushmore.

The ads featured Trump's voice calling for the defeat of socialism and communism. Trump's super PAC, MAGA Inc., has confirmed it is paying for forthcoming ads.
