President Donald Trump announced on Friday the creation of a committee of inquiry to help him decide whether to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.

Trump has accused Cook of mortgage fraud and in 2025 ordered her to be fired, but the Supreme Court blocked that effort on procedural grounds. The Supreme Court's majority opinion in *Trump v. Cook*, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, mentioned a precedent from 1912 when President William Howard Taft convened a similar committee. Trump informed Cook in August that he was considering another attempt to fire her, and her attorneys responded later that month, denying the allegations.

The committee will hold a hearing at the White House on November 5, which Cook is expected to attend with an attorney. She will have until November 10 to follow up after the proceedings. The committee will then recommend to the president whether there is cause for her removal, with the final decision resting with the president.

Trump appointed Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council; Keith Sonderling, acting director of the Office of Government Ethics and Labor secretary; and Andrea R. Lucas, chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, to the committee. All three are Trump appointees. No president prior to Trump had attempted to remove a Federal Reserve governor in the central bank's 112-year history.

The law allows for a governor's removal for cause, but the term is not defined in the statute. Trump's memo directs the panel to provide him with written findings of fact and conclusions of law.
