Pope Leo XIV Departs Rome for 12-Day Tour of South America
The Story
The 71-year-old pontiff undertook the journey just weeks after undergoing surgery on October 13 to remove a malignant tumor from his right lung.
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni stated that the pope has fully recovered and requires no special medical precautions. The itinerary includes stops in Uruguay, where the pope will meet with President Yamandu Orsi and visit a disadvantaged neighborhood in Montevideo. He will then travel to Argentina for a three-day visit, where he is scheduled to meet with right-wing President Javier Milei, before spending six days in Peru, where he lived for decades and served as a bishop until 2023.
Vatican officials stated that the pope's speeches will address regional issues including environmental destruction, arms trafficking, and political instability. The journey marks his sixth international voyage and his first visit to the Americas since his election in May 2025. Earlier in the week, the pope met with American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. Additionally, the Vatican announced the appointment of Archbishop Franco Coppola as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Hungary.
