Trump Promises $5,000 Dividend if Republicans Win Midterms
The Story
President Donald Trump pledged on Wednesday to issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the November midterm elections.
Trump made the promise during his speech at the Republican Party's midterm convention in Dallas. The proposal, which he called the "Trump Dividend," could cost more than $1.2 trillion, based on an estimated 240 million to 245.3 million adult citizens. Vice President JD Vance suggested that the payments might exclude wealthy Americans and defended the plan by pointing to tariff revenues, which generated $34.2 billion in customs duties in one recent month.
Critics on both sides of the aisle raised concerns about the plan's cost and legality, with some calling it a socialist vote-buying scheme. Joe Lonsdale, a Republican donor, stated on X that he was strongly against bread and circus bribes. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, questioned how the proposal would be funded. Previous similar proposals, including "DOGE dividends" and tariff-rebate checks, did not materialize.
The national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, and the federal government recorded a budget deficit of roughly $1.8 trillion in fiscal year 2025. Trump also urged supporters to consider him on the ballot and framed the election as a choice between Republican prosperity and Democratic regression. His nephew, Fred Trump III, criticized the convention as a clown show.
