Trump Unveils Drug Pricing Discounts Projected to Save Americans Billions

President Trump announced a major step forward in prescription drug prices on Monday, unveiling a new deal projected to save Americans more than $600 billion.

The announcement took place in the Oval Office, where Trump was surrounded by officials from some of the nation's largest drug companies. Under the most-favored nation agreement, drug prices in the United States will align with the lowest prices paid by other developed nations, according to the White House. Trump stated that these discounts represent the largest reduction in prescription drug prices in the country's history.

He accused drug companies and other nations of ripping off the United States, claiming the US consumes 13% of all prescription drugs but drug companies take 75% of their profits from the United States. A 2024 study by Rand Corp. found US prescription drug prices average nearly three times higher than those overseas, with branded drug prices more than four times higher.

The agreements bring the total number of pharmaceutical manufacturers with most-favored nation deals to 26, covering 89% of the branded drug market. Lowering prescription drug prices has been a major focus for the president in his second term. Trump also stated he lost some very good friends over demanding a better deal on prescriptions. A Gallup poll in March found 71% of Americans opposed building a data center in their communities.
