Saudi Crown Prince Meets CENTCOM Head Amid Houthi Red Sea Advances
The Story
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with US Central Command head Admiral Brad Cooper in Jeddah on Monday to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments.
This meeting occurred as Yemen's Houthi rebels announced the capture of Greater and Lesser Hanish Islands in the southern Red Sea, bolstering their ability to control maritime traffic. The Houthis have also seized Mayun Island and the port of Mokha, threatening the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key shipping route. This advance follows a drone attack on September 10-11 that damaged Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline, which bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.
Saudi Arabia blamed Iran-backed militias in Iraq for the pipeline attack. The Houthis have escalated attacks on Saudi cities and energy infrastructure, with satellite imagery showing damage to a fuel depot and a military site. Saudi Arabia previously requested the postponement of a meeting between Iran and Gulf powers in Oman. The United States is reportedly holding direct talks with the Houthis while intensifying consultations with Saudi Arabia.
