Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada will resign this month following the state's botched execution of Christa Pike, Governor Bill Lee announced Saturday.

Pike, 50, survived two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital on Wednesday night and was taken to a hospital where she remained unconscious and on a ventilator. Her lawyers stated she suffered chemical burns and blisters on both arms as executioners made multiple attempts to insert needles. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 torture and murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, a crime she committed at age 18.

Governor Lee has halted all further executions for the year pending a comprehensive, third-party review of the incident. This marks Tennessee's second failed execution this year, following the case of Tony Carruthers in May. Pike's legal team has called the resignation justified but stated it does not help Pike, describing the event as a systemic failure. Strada maintained that his department followed established protocol but supported the independent investigation.
