Trump, New York City Mayor Mamdani Meet at Gracie Mansion
The Story
President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet on Monday at Gracie Mansion, the mayor's official residence.
This meeting tests a budding working relationship despite deep divisions over immigration and other major policy fights. Trump is traveling to New York City this week for the United Nations General Assembly and is meeting with Mamdani ahead of the summit. The mayor's office confirmed the meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.
This will be their third in-person meeting and the first on the mayor's home turf. Presidential visits to Gracie Mansion are rare; John F. Kennedy visited in 1962, and Ronald Reagan in 1981. Trump and Mamdani have continued to trade criticism while also finding areas for cooperation. Their last meeting, on February 26 at the Oval Office, was cordial, with Mamdani seeking Trump's support for a New York housing proposal.
Mamdani pitched over $21 billion in federal grants to build 12,000 affordable homes, parks, schools, health clinics, and union jobs. Trump first met with Mamdani last November, stating Mamdani could surprise some conservative people and "The better he does, the happier I am." In February, Trump called Mamdani the new communist mayor of New York City, adding, "I think he's a nice guy, actually. I speak to him a lot. Bad policy, but nice guy."
In April, Trump wrote, "Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!" after Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a Mamdani-backed proposal for a new tax on New York City second homes valued over $5 million. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, won New York City's 2025 mayoral election. Republicans have placed Mamdani at the center of their messaging ahead of November's midterm elections, attempting to paint Democrats as communists.
Right-wing radio host Sid Rosenberg criticized the meeting, calling Mamdani an anti American piece of sh*t and a "Jew hater." Actor Michael Rapaport has called Mamdani "Zohran the moron" and the most divisive mayor in the history of this city, stating he is considering running for mayor in 2029.
