Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Primary, Faces Voter Questions

Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democratic primary, a victory that signals a leftwing shift within the party in a key Midwestern state.

El-Sayed, who channeled Muhammad Ali in his victory speech, declared, "We shook up the world." His win forces a reckoning for Democrats regarding their direction and leadership. During the primary campaign, El-Sayed faced questions about his ability to energize Black voters, a critical bloc that largely favored his rival, establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens. El-Sayed also drew criticism for remarks disparaging Mackinac Island, a historic Michigan destination that banned motor vehicles in the 1890s.

He defended his comments, stating, "I don’t think the most American place in Michigan is a place that…bans cars." Senate Democrats have rallied behind El-Sayed but have avoided questions about his progressive agenda, which includes policies on defunding the police, abolishing ICE, and Medicare for All.
