Luigi Mangione Hearing Set Friday Amid Plea Deal Speculation

Justice Department prosecutors and defense attorneys for Luigi Mangione requested a conference with a U.S. judge for Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. This request has prompted speculation that Mangione could agree to a plea deal in his federal case.

The two-sentence letter requesting the hearing did not specify its purpose. He faces federal charges of two counts of stalking resulting in death, with two other counts, including murder through use of a firearm, having been dismissed. Mangione also faces state charges including second-degree murder, multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a forged instrument, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Jury selection for the state case is scheduled for September 8, 2026, with the federal trial tentatively set for early 2027. New York state law allows for double jeopardy to come into play if a prior prosecution for the same conduct results in a conviction by guilty plea or trial resolution, potentially impacting state charges if a federal plea deal is reached.

On Tuesday, August 11, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro ruled that the identities of jurors in the state murder trial will remain anonymous due to concerns about witness and juror intimidation from Mangione's supporters. The judge also ordered an overflow room for media and the public, while warning against cellphone use in the courtroom or overflow room.
