Gloria Steinem, Feminist Icon, Dies at 92

Gloria Steinem, a central figure in the women's liberation movement and co-founder of Ms. Magazine, died on September 2, 2026, at age 92.

Her death, occurring eight days after that of entertainer Dolly Parton, has prompted a double dose of grief among feminists and across generations. Steinem, described as a trailblazing icon, was remembered for her journalistic pursuits, including co-founding New York Magazine, and her activism for women's civil and reproductive rights. Joanie Bily, CEO of Dress for Success Worldwide, stated that Steinem's unwavering commitment to women's equality, opportunity, and empowerment helped shape generations of changemakers.

The organization planned to honor Steinem at an upcoming luncheon where she was scheduled to be the keynote speaker. Steinem had recently finished a memoir slated for release on September 22. Dolly Parton also worked until her death on August 25, having revealed health issues in May and canceling a Las Vegas residency while assuring fans she was still working. Parton was involved in numerous projects, including a biopic and musical documentary, before her death.
