Prime Minister Burnham Urges Clean Energy Transition After Fire Visit

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on Friday that Britain must face up to the changing climate and accelerate its move to clean energy.

He made these remarks during a visit to Stourbridge, a town where a wildfire gutted homes. Stourbridge is located near the UK's second largest city of Birmingham, and smoke rose from smouldering ruins of several roofs in the town. Mr. Burnham urged a transition to more clean energy. The UK Government temporarily banned sales of disposable barbecues, citing a risk to public.

In other policy actions, VAT will be scrapped from household electricity bills under plans announced by the government last month, which Prime Minister Andy Burnham vowed to ease the cost-of-living squeeze. This was one of his first acts as Prime Minister. Politically, Green council leader Mark Blake in Haringey expressed disappointment with Mr. Burnham’s national government for failing to devolve power to implement rent control.
