The Story
The captain of a ferry that capsized off northern Cyprus appeared in court on Monday as rescuers continued to search for 20 people still missing.
At least eight people died in the incident. The boat capsized just a few miles off Kyrenia Port in northern Cyprus. One report states 267 people were on board the ferry. Ayten Bicer and Hayri Bicer's two children are among the missing; Ayten Bicer stated her 12-year-old daughter slipped from her grasp. Search and rescue operations continue by sea and air.
Turkey aids the search efforts. Northern Cyprus is a territory occupied by Turkey but not internationally recognized. Earlier reports indicated seven people had died and 23 or 18 people were missing.
