Top House Democrat Backs Impeachment While Trump Vows Preemptive Pardons
The Story
Representative Adam Smith of Washington announced his support for impeaching President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth if Democrats win control of Congress in the midterm elections.
Smith cited Trump's embrace of Vladimir Putin and unhinged speeches as key factors reversing his previous position against impeachment. In response to potential Democratic investigations targeting his administration, Trump stated during an interview with the New York Post that he would preemptively pardon staff members and administration officials if necessary, drawing a comparison to pardons issued by former President Joe Biden and his own pardons of January 6 participants.
Democrats hold a 9-point lead in polls ahead of the midterm elections, which feature all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats on the ballot. If Democrats secure a majority in either chamber, they plan to launch investigations into administration corruption, White House finances, cabinet conduct, and ties between officials and figures such as Elon Musk.
