George Clooney Receives Venice Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement

George Clooney received the Venice Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

Clooney, along with other icons like Nicole Kidman, continues to base himself at the Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido during the festival, which recently underwent renovations. Clooney delivered a speech upon accepting the award, warning about political divisions and lamenting that leaders are telling them to fear one another. He also spoke about the press, democracy, and the threat artificial intelligence poses to the idea of truth, stating, "I would like to avoid being in a tampon commercial 20 years after I’m dead."

He expressed concern that AI could poison the well of saying 'maybe this is true', 'maybe this isn’t', leading people to dismiss real truths as fake. Clooney experienced a moment at the Venice Film Festival in 2005 with his film "Good Night, and Good Luck," a tribute to journalist Edward R. Murrow. He made the film with his father, journalist Nick Clooney, and admired reporters in mind.

Clooney repeatedly mentioned his wife, Amal Clooney, stating he married her in Venice and that the city inspires hope for them. The Venice International Film Festival, centered on the Lido island, is celebrating its 83rd edition. The Hotel Excelsior, which hosted the inaugural festival in 1932, reopened in May this year after renovations to its interiors.

Clooney defended free speech when asked about his colleague Mark Ruffalo, stating, "I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely." He added, "I like him, he’s a good man." James Woods, however, criticized Clooney's stance, arguing that no one is trying to take away Ruffalo's right to speak, but rather to criticize his hate-filled mind and antisemitic screeds.

Woods stated that Clooney believes Ruffalo has a right to speak without criticism. Clooney also highlighted his work on behalf of imprisoned journalists through the Clooney Foundation for Justice.
