Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday, Oct. 17, that US officials are formulating a proposal for a trilateral summit involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia.

Potential venues include the upcoming Group of 20 summit in the United States, locations in the Middle East such as the Emirates or Saudi Arabia, or a European host nation. Zelensky noted that European governments have also initiated diplomatic outreach regarding hosting the consultations, but neither the US nor Russia has formally confirmed the summit parameters.

US President Donald Trump earlier stated he is uncertain if Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the Miami G20 gathering, but affirmed he would love to have him participate. Zelensky also confirmed Ukrainian officials are in continuous communication with Trump’s special diplomatic envoys to explore mechanisms to halt Russian military aggression. National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov held consultations with US special envoy Jared Kushner on Friday, Oct. 16, to arrange a meeting, which Zelensky is ready to attend.

Kyiv supports dialogue to achieve an energy ceasefire or a complete end to the war. These diplomatic efforts unfold amid a deteriorating relationship between Trump and Zelensky. Trump earlier called on Zelensky to step down and hold wartime elections. The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Russia fully agrees with Trump's point of view, blaming Zelensky for not wanting a peaceful settlement.

Under pressure from Trump, Ukraine previously agreed not to strike Russian oil refineries, understanding Russia would reduce attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. This did not happen, and three days into the pause, Zelensky said Ukraine's armed forces are resuming strikes. Trump had demanded Ukraine stop strikes, claiming they drive up global diesel prices.
