UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested that Britain could rejoin the European Union, a proposal that received a warm reaction from French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Speaking in Madrid, Macron said "Welcome back" in English and described a potential UK return as very good news for both the UK and Europeans. Sánchez affirmed Spain would open its arms to such a bid. Their comments followed Burnham's speech at the Labour party conference, where he stated Britain needed to decide on a long-term relationship with its largest market and that Brexit had done more harm than good.

In subsequent interviews on Wednesday, Burnham outlined several options for the UK's future relationship with the EU: maintaining the status quo, seeking a customs union, returning to the single market, or pursuing full EU membership. Macron, who has frequently criticized Brexit as the biggest lie of the last 30 years, praised Burnham's boldness. He cited shortfalls in economic growth and trade, and increased complexity in immigration control, as consequences of Brexit.

Burnham's current position marks a shift from his statement in May, when he said he was not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU and respected the 2016 referendum decision. This has drawn criticism and accusations of a "Brexit U-turn." Burnham, who replaced Keir Starmer in July, previously expressed a desire for Britain to rejoin the EU in his lifetime.

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, plans to deliver a speech in Doncaster, a pro-Brexit area, to oppose Burnham's stance, interpreting go all the way as potentially adopting the Euro. An EU-UK summit, postponed from July, is scheduled for November to discuss future ties, including carbon markets, agri-food trade, and youth mobility.
