Grenade Explodes Near German Train Station, Injuring Two Ukrainians

At least two teenagers were injured on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after a suspected hand grenade exploded outside a jewelry store near a train station in Augsburg, southern Germany.

The blast occurred around 3:15 a.m. local time in a building passageway on Bahnhofstrasse, a road leading to the station. German newspaper Bild reported the explosion was caused by a hand grenade, injuring a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens, who suffered ear damage and other minor wounds. Windows were shattered following the detonation in front of a Turkish jewelry shop.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and bomb squads are investigating the explosion. Police are investigating a possible connection to organized crime, with sources telling Bild that the train station itself was not the main target. Hours after the initial explosion, another suspicious object was found in the city's main train station. The station was closed, and all passengers were evacuated around 8 a.m. local time.

Explosives experts from the State Criminal Police Office were at the scene. The second object was later found to be harmless, and train services resumed at around 10 a.m. local time. A police spokesperson stated details on the explosive device remained unclear and that it was still too early to say anything about a possible motive.

Augsburg is a regional transport hub approximately 55 kilometers northwest of Munich. The incident follows Germany's accusation on Tuesday that Russia carried out a failed drone sabotage operation at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the closure of Russia's consulate in Bonn and the termination of the contract for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin, citing forensic evidence and intelligence findings tying Russia to the August 4 incident.
