Former UK Prime Minister Starmer Resigns as MP, Focuses on Global Affairs

Sir Keir Starmer announced his departure from the House of Commons on Tuesday, stepping down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras.

He told local media he decided over the summer to pivot toward global issues, stating he would now focus on other things, and that will be international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world. Starmer also intends to continue his work on combating violence against women and girls, an issue he started before becoming an MP.

His resignation triggers an imminent by-election in the central London constituency, a Labour stronghold where he secured a majority of over 11,000 votes in the 2024 general election. Conservative chairman Kevin Hollinrake accused Starmer of making another U-turn having pledged to stay on, prompting a costly by-election for taxpayers. Starmer had previously stated he would remain an MP until the next UK general election, due in 2029.

He represented Holborn and St Pancras for 11 years, having taken over from Frank Dobson. Starmer resigned as Prime Minister in June or July, two years after leading the Labour Party to a landslide victory in 2024. Andy Burnham assumed the role of Prime Minister over the summer, replacing Starmer. Prime Minister Burnham paid tribute to Starmer in the House of Commons, telling MPs Starmer gave the UK a lifetime of public service.

Starmer's announcement comes hours before Prime Minister Burnham is due to deliver his first statement in the Commons. Foreign affairs were often seen as a strength during Starmer's premiership; he worked with French President Emmanuel Macron to establish the Coalition of the Willing in support of Ukraine, reset ties with China, recognized a Palestinian state, and had mixed success in efforts to build relations with US President Donald Trump.
