Indiana Flooding Claims At Least Seven Lives After Days of Rain

At least seven people have died in Indiana following days of heavy rain and record-setting flooding.

The storms began on August 11. Floodwaters from the White River in Indianapolis peaked early Sunday morning. High water levels were expected to remain for a few hours before receding. The city's Department of Public Works planned to reopen floodgates on Sunday. Hundreds of homes along the river and its canals had been evacuated. First responders used boats to rescue stranded residents.

Among the deceased were a 4-year-old boy, two men, and three women. The boy died Tuesday in Jennings County when a tree fell on his home during high winds. A 19-year-old man died after jumping off a bridge into the Mississinewa River with friends three days prior. Officials in Delaware County recovered the body of a 58-year-old woman on Saturday.

Her car was swept away on a flooded road, and authorities believe she died when the vehicle was overcome by water. Emergency shelters remained open for those displaced by the flooding.
