Spain's Sanchez Calls Snap Election Amid Housing Crisis Protests
The Story
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap general election for November 29 on October 5, moving the vote forward from its scheduled date in August 2027.
The decision followed parliament's rejection of two emergency housing decrees on Friday, October 2. These decrees aimed to cap rents and block further evictions, responding to widespread public anger over a mounting housing crisis. The eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home on September 23 galvanized protests across more than 50 Spanish cities, with hundreds of thousands demonstrating on Saturday and calling for a general strike.
Sanchez's Socialist Party (PSOE) currently trails in most opinion polls, hovering around 28-33%. Projections suggest a coalition between the conservative People's Party (PP) and the far-right Vox could secure an absolute majority in the 350-seat lower house, with Vox polling at roughly 18%. Sanchez, who has governed for eight years without a parliamentary majority, is described as a political gambler.
His government plans to re-approve the rejected housing decrees before the election by utilizing the Standing Committee, which assumes parliament's functions when dissolved, potentially making Catalan separatist Junts less decisive. Anger persists over an amnesty for Catalan separatists that helped him secure a third term in 2023. Internationally, Sanchez has openly accused Israel of genocide in Gaza and defied US President Donald Trump's demands for increased defense spending and use of Spanish airbases for the war on Iran. Sanchez warned Spaniards about an extreme-right wave seen in other countries.
