Green Party Leader Zack Polanski to Run for Starmer's London MP Seat

UK Green Party leader Zack Polanski announced his intention on Thursday to stand as a candidate for MP for London's Holborn and St. Pancras parliamentary constituency.

This decision follows former prime minister Keir Starmer's resignation as MP on Tuesday. Polanski told the Camden New Journal that the constituency represents so many of the things that make London so special and expressed enthusiasm for representing the area in Parliament. His candidacy requires selection by local Green Party members. Holborn and St Pancras has been a Labour seat since the 1980s, previously held by Frank Dobson and then Starmer.

In the 2024 general election, Starmer secured the seat with 48.9% of the vote, while an independent candidate received 18.9% and the Greens garnered 10.4%. Polanski acknowledged the electoral challenge, describing it as a clear fight between Labour and the Green Party. He pledged that, if elected, he would force the current Labour government into making life more affordable for the people who live here.

Polanski currently serves as a London Assembly Member. The Green Party presently holds 5 MPs but has not yet won a parliamentary seat in the capital. Oddschecker reported on Thursday, September 3, that Labour is favored at 1/4 odds, but the Greens have seen increased punter support, reaching 3/1 odds. Polanski is the first Jewish leader of the Green Party, identifies as anti-Zionist, and frequently participates in pro-Palestinian events.

Andrew Feinstein, a former South African MP who ran as an independent against Starmer in 2024, indicated he would not contest against Polanski, advocating for the unity of all progressive forces. Keir Starmer announced his resignation as MP after 11 years, six weeks after stepping down as the UK's prime minister.
