Rory McIlroy Questions Value of Returning LIV Golf Stars

Golfer Rory McIlroy questioned the value of LIV stars on Thursday, stating that players who want to return from LIV Golf to the PGA Tour face a tough road ahead.

Speaking ahead of the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St Louis, Missouri, McIlroy asked, "I would argue, have they brought value to LIV?" He believes the PGA Tour is in a really good spot. LIV Golf announced earlier this month that it secured a lead investor to provide funding as it prepares for a future without backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The 2026 LIV Golf season is ending this weekend at LIV Golf Indianapolis, with the team championship event in Plymouth, Michigan, having been cancelled. Payouts for the LIV Golf finale are reduced, with the bonus pool for the player championship down to $10 million from $30 million in 2025, and the team championship bonus pool down to $30 million from $50 million in 2025.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil found someone willing to financially back the promotion, but at a much lower level of commitment. It remains unclear whether major champions Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm will stay with LIV Golf beyond this season or seek a return to the PGA Tour. Brooks Koepka rejoined the PGA Tour in early 2026 using a limited-time Returning Member Program after leaving LIV Golf last December. PGA Tour golfer Sam Burns stated he wants LIV Golf stars Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau back on the PGA Tour.
