Banned Driver Jailed 13 Years for Killing Pensioner in Stolen Maserati Crash

Fraser Garden, 55, has been jailed for 13 years and six months at the High Court in Edinburgh for causing the death of John Bell, 74, by dangerous driving.

Garden admitted stealing a Maserati from a car showroom in Broughty Ferry on April 13 this year. He then drove the vehicle at speeds exceeding 80mph through a residential area, nearly three times the 30mph limit. Mr. Bell suffered non-survivable injuries when he was struck by the car and pinned against a wall in his garden in Broughty Ferry.

Garden also admitted theft of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and failing to provide a blood sample for drug testing. Lord Baird, who sentenced Garden on Friday, banned him from driving for more than 56 years and described his offending as being of the utmost severity. Lord Baird stated that Garden demonstrated a wicked disregard for the lives of others from the moment he drove away from the garage. The court heard that no sentence could compensate for the loss Mr. Bell's family and friends have suffered.
