One hundred fifty-seven firefighters, 44 fire vehicles, and four aircraft battled the Croatian blaze, which shut a major coastal highway. In Germany, a wildfire in the Hürtgen forest in North Rhine-Westphalia state forced the evacuation of all 1,800 residents of the village of Gey. The German fire burned nearly 300 hectares (740 acres) and was within 400 meters of Gey. Bundeswehr forces, including two water transport helicopters and two rescue tanks, are assisting, with the presence of unexploded World War II munitions complicating firefighting efforts. Europe is experiencing its fifth heatwave this summer, with widespread temperatures above 30C. Wildfires have scorched approximately 500,000 hectares across the European Union this summer.
