Russian Drones Strike Near Polish Border, Evacuate Train With Boris Johnson
The Story
Russian drone strikes occurred near Ukraine's border with Poland on Sunday, impacting a truck and a passenger train.
A truck was hit approximately 800 meters from Poland near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing point, which briefly ceased operations before resuming. Separately, a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw was struck by a Russian drone two kilometers from the Polish border in Ukraine's Volyn region. The train carried former British prime minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's adviser Günter Sautter, security advisers from Britain, France, and Italy, German MPs, diplomats, and academics.
Passengers on Johnson's train received an evacuation warning around 5 am amid a drone alert. The train immediately behind Johnson's was hit, but no one was injured on either train due to early warnings. Ukrainian railway authorities confirmed the locomotive was struck. Ukraine's air force reported Russia launched more than 450 drones and missiles overnight, intercepting 405 drones and four missiles.
At least six people were killed and over 40 injured in other overnight attacks across Ukraine. Russia's Defense Ministry stated it targeted infrastructure facilitating military cargoes from Europe in Western Ukraine. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, described the strikes as "Putin's terror 'knocking' directly on the doors of the EU and NATO." Polish Deputy Minister of National Defence Cezary Tomczyk stated the war is happening very close to the Polish border.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Polish systems detected Geran-5 jet-powered drones, with one striking one kilometer from the Polish border and another five kilometers away. Polish airspace was monitored by F-16 fighter jets, helicopters, and a Saab airborne reconnaissance aircraft, with no violation recorded. US President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian refineries, stating the attacks cause a diesel shortage.
Kyiv maintains its long-range strikes on Russia's oil and gas industry fund and fuel Russia's war. Two people were killed and 14 injured in Russia's Tatarstan region from Ukrainian drone strikes.
