Authorities on the Canary Island of El Hierro declared a state of emergency and requested government assistance in Madrid following an influx of migrant boat arrivals.

Alpidio Armas, head of the governing council for El Hierro, stated that officials are facing a sharp increase in arrivals and undesirable conditions at the island hospital while seeking temporary accommodation. More than 3,300 people arrived on the island aboard approximately 30 boats since the start of November. Canary Police figures cited a running total of about 4,587 boat arrivals across the islands during the same six-day window.

Local authorities deployed buses to migration operations and brought in medical staff from other islands while warning that an approaching storm could make crossings more dangerous for individuals still at sea. Recovery operations located at least two dead migrants on a boat earlier in the week, with survivor accounts indicating five additional deaths during a separate voyage. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska traveled to Dakar to meet with Mouhmamadou Makhtar Cisse and press the government of Senegal over departure prevention measures.
