British Columbia Wildfires Force 20,000 Evacuations, Destroy Homes Near Okanagan Lake

More than 20,000 people received evacuation orders overnight in western Canada as a rapidly expanding wildfire moved toward communities along British Columbia’s Okanagan Lake, destroying residences in its path.

The entire community of Summerland, home to approximately 12,000 residents, was ordered evacuated, alongside an additional 8,000 individuals from other areas. The British Columbia government declared a state of emergency as 102 wildfires burn across the province. Nearly half of these fires are reported as out of control. Canada’s federal government announced it will provide urgent assistance to British Columbia to aid in the response efforts.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating a possible wildfire death near Summerland, though hazardous conditions have prevented authorities from confirming the fatality. Officials state the Bald Range wildfire triggered the largest evacuation event so far this summer in the region. The Bald Range wildfire nearly doubled in size, forcing 20,000 people to flee. The blaze has been described as being similar to “a bomb going off.” Firefighters continue to battle the 102 fires day and night across the province.
