Trump Defends Russian Diesel Deal Amid Bipartisan Congressional Criticism
The Story
President Donald Trump defended his surprise deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to import Russian diesel, despite bipartisan criticism from Congress.
Trump announced the deal last week, stating it aims to ease high prices at the pumps for Americans ahead of the midterm elections. Trump also stated, "Anything that could help our farmers, our ranchers, I like." Energy experts, including Neil Atkinson, former head of the IEA's oil industry and markets division, said the initial 300,000 metric tons of Russian diesel (approximately 2.24 million barrels) is very, very small, representing about 2% of total U.S. demand and less than 1% of global demand.
Goldman Sachs estimated the October and November Russian diesel would only reduce wholesale diesel prices by $1 to $2 per barrel. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the agreement absolutely terrible and a gift to Putin.
