Iran Allows Iraqi Oil Tankers Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Around 40 oil tankers crossed the Strait of Hormuz via the southern route on Friday night, according to Axios citing U.S. officials.
Iran allowed a number of Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, granting exceptional passage. Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported this on Saturday, stating the permission followed repeated requests from Baghdad through various channels. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Baghdad on August 19, 2026.
Obtaining special permission for Iraqi tankers was one of Baghdad’s requests. Iraqi parliament speaker Haibat al-Halbousi also asked his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, for the passage. Data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) shows 103 ships entered the strait and 89 left over the past week. Tehran confirmed it allowed the Iraqi oil tankers passage through Hormuz.
