Germany Investigates Two Suspected Sabotage Attacks on Power Grid

German authorities are investigating two suspected acts of sabotage targeting electricity substations in different parts of the country.

In eastern Brandenburg, improvised explosive devices were used early Tuesday to damage power cables at a substation in Turnow-Preilack, north of Cottbus. Brandenburg police found several devices, some undetonated, and bomb-disposal officers were deployed. Projectiles containing conductive material appear to have been fired at overhead cables, causing short circuits and a visible flash. One line was briefly interrupted, but other connections carried the load, and there was no reported loss of supply to homes or businesses.

The Jänschwalde power station, the largest in Brandenburg, experienced a technical outage on a generating unit, which operators expected to return to service during the evening.
