Florida Democrat Nixon Denies Socialist Label Despite DSA Membership
The Story
Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon denied on Sunday that she is a socialist, despite acknowledging her membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Republican Representative Carlos Gimenez, who fled Fidel Castro's Cuba, stated Nixon is either a bona-fide socialist, or she's not very smart. Nixon, a progressive state representative, upset Trump impeachment witness Alexander Vindman in last week's Democratic primary. She joined the DSA in June, citing its platform on public housing, healthcare, veterans, and removing big money from politics.
Gimenez argued that socialists and communists deny what they are until they get into power, drawing a comparison to Castro's initial denials of being a Marxist before publicly embracing Leninism in 1961. He also suggested that DSA proposals to abolish the Senate and restructure the Supreme Court are similar to how socialist regimes restructure government.
Nixon's campaign has focused on expanding healthcare, childcare, and education, as well as tackling the affordability crisis. She stated, "I know what it’s like to struggle. I don’t want anyone to have to struggle the way in which I did." If elected in November, Nixon would become the only DSA member in the Senate. She will face incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody, who was appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Nixon has also claimed that billionaires and elected officials are conspiring to keep schoolchildren uneducated so they will work in prisons when they grow up.
