Secret White House Bunker Undermines Trump's $600 Million Ballroom Security Case

Former officials state the White House complex already has a secret bunker, undermining President Donald Trump’s security justification for his $600 million White House ballroom.

Three ex-officials point to the existence of this nuclear-proof underground base. The bunker, commissioned after the 9/11 attacks and completed during Barack Obama’s tenure, is situated 60 feet below street level. It is accessible by private elevator, stores a month’s supply of food, and has its own air supply system, intended to shield inhabitants from threats including weapons of mass destruction.

This facility succeeded the Presidential Emergency Operations Center in the East Wing basement, built for Franklin D Roosevelt in the Second World War. It safeguarded first lady Laura Bush and vice president Dick Cheney during the 9/11 attacks. White House spokesman Davis Ingle states the "East Wing Modernization Project is inextricably tied to the security of the president, the White House grounds and the certain security infrastructure assets."

Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told the Supreme Court the underground facility is essential to continuity of government and a nondiscretionary prerequisite. Chief Justice John Roberts issued an order Friday allowing construction to continue while the Supreme Court weighs the case. Lower courts had previously halted construction except for national-security-related work.

The ballroom project, initially a $200 million event-space renovation, has grown to $600 million, with taxpayers expected to cover over half. The project is roughly 65 percent complete, employing 250 workers on 20-hour shifts. Former officials counter that the same rationale was used two decades ago to build the existing bunker. Trump claims the new ballroom is necessary because venues like the Washington Hilton are security nightmares, citing the shooting of Reagan at the hotel.

He also states the White House is too small for state dinners, leading to unseemly tents and porta-johns. Trump posted on Truth Social that the construction is so vital for National Security. The Constitution’s Property Clause gives Congress complete power over federal property, and a 1912 law requires express congressional authority for D.C. federal buildings.
